The Last Instructions of Jesus Part Three

guys have got a seat. I appreciate y'all coming here. I um for a lot of new faces. So, for those who don't know, we've been we started a series called the last instructions of Jesus.

Um about 60 years after his resurrection, um Jesus came back and in a vision of John, uh he dictated seven letters to seven different churches. And and um they're tucked in here in Revelation. And just like Paul wrote to seven churches, we and they apply to us. These were written to seven churches and they apply to us.

Okay? Um whenever Jesus is speaking and these these passages in Revelation 2 and 3 are all red letters. So it's just Jesus talking. And so um we started last week with the first letter.

Um, I gave some homework out uh to everyone to spend like 10 minute or five minutes at the end of their time like just instead of talking to God, like letting God talk to them. Um, did anyone get anything big out of that? Like something you want to share because I don't have a testimonial up here. Um, and I also challenge them to just read the Bible a little um or a little bit more than they are if they haven't been.

And um sometimes God will speak a word to you through that scripture and then later that day it happens, you know. And so does anyone got anything they want to share that might have happened this week that was cool? Anything good? Okay.

So I still want you to do it then because um God will use those things. Okay? It is good for us to to be still. And probably there were some stories that you're just uncomfortable uh speaking up in here in front of us.

But let's dive in. We're in Revelation chapter 2. We're now to the second letter to the second church. This is the persecuted church.

And it's verses 8 through 11. And I'm going to read, "And to the angel of the church at Smyrna, write these things, says the first and the last, who was dead and came to life. I know your works, tribulation, and poverty, but you are rich. And I know the blasphemy of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.

Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation 10 days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. He who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the churches.

He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death. So, the truth is, no one in America is persecuted. We're not the persecuted church here. You can go to a Waffle House, hold a Bible study.

You're not going to get thrown in prison. you're not going to be um murdered. But there are places in the world where just meeting together as a Christian can have you murdered, can have you thrown in prison. And those are the places, ironically, where Christianity is exploding the most.

And it's always been that way. From the earliest of times, the um church thrives under persecution. Okay. when the uh when Jesus rose again and the disciples were all meeting in Jerusalem, um the Jewish people tried to stone Stephen and that spread the gospel because everyone fled from Jerusalem and brought the word with them.

Okay? And uh I say the devil tried to use, you know, Nero and all these other Roman people to to uh persecute the Christians and it just kept growing.

So that by 200 the church the Christian was Christianity was the the national religion of of the emp empire of Rome right so we thrive under that and and even though there's none of that here in America there's some things we can learn from this church okay the first thing is unlike most of these letters the way the pattern is is Jesus mentions all the good stuff they do and then he tells them what they're doing wrong and what they need to do in this passage he doesn't tell this church that they're doing anything wrong. Okay?

It doesn't say this I hold against you. Instead, he says, "Be faithful until death and I will give you the crown of life. He who has an ear, let him hear." Um, so he tells him to hold on to the end, which is interesting.

And then he says here, "He who overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death." So the second death appears in Revelation 20. Okay. Um, verses 4 through8.

And I'm going to again just read the Bible. And I saw the thrones and they sat on them and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God and had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is is he who is who is in the first resurrection.

over such the second death has no power but they shall be priests of God and of Christ and shall reign with him a thousand years that second death so this happens after the rapture what we just read and this second death is further explained down here it's right after the great white throne judgment which again is in verse 20 chapter um chapter 20 verse 11 and I'm going to read then I saw a great white throne and him who sat on it from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away and there was found no place for him and I saw the dead small and great, standing before God, and books were opened.

And another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and death and hades delivered up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one according to their works. Then death and hades were cast into the lake of fire.

This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the book of life was cast into the fire. So, I know this is a heavy verse. All right, we're gonna have fun this morning with this.

But um there is a time coming when Jesus will be on the throne and he will judge everyone um by their works and they will either end up in one of two places, hell or heaven. Okay? And it's it's the Bible. And the Christians who are written in the book of life because of what Jesus did on the cross, the guilt the verdict against them is going to be not guilty.

and they get to go to heaven, which is what the beautiful, beautiful piece of what Jesus did is for us. We get to spend an eternity with God. Um, right? That's a beautiful thing.

However um look at what we're reading here though with this second church. Okay? They have to go through the whole tribulation period, okay? not take the mark and they get to reign with Christ for a thousand years.

Okay. Um that's according to what Jesus Christ is saying here in Revelation 2, not what Brian Pier is saying. So that brings up an interesting dilemma here, which is most people have been taught a pre-tribulation rapture that we get raptured up first. Okay.

So if that's so then how can and this is a letter written to the church. How can the church then go through the whole period if it got raptured up before? It brings a conundrum up. And like we said from the beginning the the purpose of this church is to teach the word of God unapologetically and then to prepare ourselves for what's what's to come to get ourselves ready.

Okay. And and to get the bride ready for the coming of the king. And we shared that if I believe this, but Jesus says this, then I have to change my belief. Even if what was taught to me by people that I love and respect.

Okay? And so, we have to get our doctrine correct. Second Timothy 2:15 says, "Rightly divide." We're to rightly divide the word of truth.

And I'm not going to be here um I'm not sharing all this to to get into debates or arguments. That's not my purpose or my point. My point is because really as long as we believe that Jesus is Lord and he's coming again that's the that's primary doctrine. We got to believe that.

Okay. Whether he comes at the beginning, the end, the middle isn't as important as that he comes and he's coming back for us at some time. Okay. However, it's interesting to note that Jesus, Paul, John, we don't see the pre-tribulation rapture taught by any of those people.

Okay. Um so where did it come from and why does it why is almost every every believer. I mean, all of my mentors, you know, the church I first was grew a lot in, everyone, I believed in a pre-trip rapture until I began to read the scriptures and see that wait, it just I'm not sure it makes sense. So, I'm going to touch on it a little bit and then I'm going to wrap it with with going through where we're going from here and what we need to be doing.

Um, but but it was interesting as I as I discovered. So the pre-trip rapture can't be found until the 1800s. And then in the 1800s it was introduced and it began to gain traction with a guy named John Nelson Darby. Okay.

In 1827 he left the organized church and he started a sect called the Plymouth Brethren and it started in England and spread to America. In 1870s a lawyer who had been indicted on forgery charges um his name was Cyrus Scoffield. He got saved and then he became a preacher. Okay.

In 1909 he published the Scoffield study Bible. Okay. It was the first real big study Bible and it it became hugely wildly successful. Okay.

So a study Bible is is the Bible but then it's commentary by the person who's dictating it. So when I first got saved I had a MacArthur study Bible, John MacArthur, and he had all of his comments and notes. He believed in preerttrip. And so what happened was this this Scoffield study Bible took off and became the bedrock of most of the um theologians of that day and it became what was taught in the seminaries was this idea of a preacher of rapture.

I remember I had a preacher um that I was I was at his church for about a year and he had gotten himself a hold of a red Scoffield study Bible and he was like it's red and it has to be red. You know, he was just so excited about this this study Bible. So respected was this guy. So, pretty much every pastor since the 1920s who's gone to seminary has learned the pre-trip rapture, and they're they're all good people, okay?

But, but it just goes against huge things of scripture. And and so, again, it's not to have a a fight, but it reminds me a lot of the evolution thing. Okay? In the 1800s, Darwin proposes evolution, right?

In the 1800s, Darby pronounces this this new thing and it and it takes off as Scoffield just like evolution was accepted by all the um scientists and then eventually pushed down through the education system to all of the rest of us. This was embraced Scoffield study Bible was embraced by all the you know the theologians of the day and and then it was pushed down through the seminary school the school system to the preachers. Okay.

And I uh just like a couple weeks ago we talked about evolution and how just a third grade um discussion can kind of debunk evolution because it can't be proven. Similarly here there's a couple passages where you're just like it can't possibly be um and and anyone could debunk it. And and so the purpose again isn't to fight but it's to just get our doctrine straight so we can move on. um the only way I can see it's supporting is is through, you know, cutting and pasting some things.

So, I shared this with a friend of mine and she was very much um angry that I shared this and she said, "You've got to study what these pre-trip relation people are saying because you're wrong." Okay? And so I did I did exactly what she said because I believe we should listen to the other side, you know, and it helps sharpen us, right?

So, it's it's a shame that Democrats and Republicans can't speak to each other because the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution was built by these guys sitting in bars talking and and everyone respecting and finding a higher middle ground, right? That's where you get good stuff is when we can all talk to each other. But when we're separated, that's all the work of the devil, I believe. So, um, so I listened to them and and each time I heard something, it it I'm like, "Wow, it just doesn't jive."

For example, a lot of one of the guys I listened to, um, said that the rapture happens in Revelation 4. Okay? And so, I want us to turn there, Revelation 4:1, because I want to read this and I want us see you to see kind of how this plays out. So, Revelation 4:1, we're no longer in the red letters.

It's it's just John now um writing down, but it's still in the Bible, so it's still truth. Okay, this word is true. It says, "After these things, I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, "Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this." Okay, so when this guy was propounding on this, he did a uh word by word or or a a a you know, sentence by sentence thing through all of Revelation.

And when he got to this point, he was sharing that John is a tight cast of Christians, okay? That the trumpet, the angel with the trumpet voice, that's the trumpet where we get raptured up. And when he says, "Come up here. I'll show you.

I'll show you things that must take place of that." That was him rapturing up the church. So John was a tight cast. Like that word?

It's a fancy word. I like it. I'm going to use it. So, he's a tight cast, but but when you read it, that's just not what it says.

Okay, let's read this carefully. It's a specific angel, okay? Or a specific voice with a sound like a trumpet that's saying to a specific person, John, to come up here for a specific purpose to tell him what's to come. Okay, John didn't get raptured up here.

He finished Revelation and he lived for another year or two. He didn't get raptured up here. So, this can't possibly be symbolic of a rapture, okay? Um, it's a specific person calling up a specific person for a thing.

And God certainly knows the difference between a loud voice that's like a trumpet and an actual trumpet call, pretty sure. So, again, that's as I'm I'm listening to the guy, I'm like, you're making stuff up. And and and that's what I find a lot. I've heard people say 70 AD and it's just the Jewish people that go through tribulation.

But if you turn to chapter 12, um it can't possibly be that way in chapter 12. Chapter 12, 13- 14. Now, that's where all the actions happen in Revelation. It's crazy.

Okay, the mark, all of that happens right here. Um and it's not something to be scared. We're going to talk towards the end of of how we we just get ready for these things. But but in in chapter 12, Satan is fighting Michael and his archangels and he gets thrown out of he loses and he gets thrown out of heaven and he comes down and it says here in in Revelation 12:1 17 and the dragon that's Satan um in 12 earlier it said the great dragon was cast out the serpent of old called the devil and Satan.

So when it says here the dragon it's Satan. The dragon was enraged with the woman and he went to make war with the rest of her offspring who keep the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. >> There's that's the description of a Christian. Like Jewish people don't take the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Okay, that is a Christian. And he's and he comes down to make war it says with those people. And then chapter 13, as you continue reading the next verse, okay, it introduces the antichrist and how does he make war with the offspring in chapter in chapter 13 verse 5, we see and he the antichrist was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies and he was given authority to continue for 42 months, three and a half years. Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God to blasphe his name, his tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven.

It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. and authority was given him over every tribe and everyone worships beast. So taking it just in context, not out of context, if he's Satan's coming down to make war with those who hold the testimony of Jesus Christ, which must be Christians. Okay?

And then he does that by engaging the Antichrist to attack the saints, which are Christians. You can't say then in in the scope of this that those saints were actually Jewish people or they were the the the 144,000 sealed. It has to be the same people. Okay?

So if he's going to attack us for 42 months Christians, how can we have been raptured up >> beforehand? If during the time we're going to be attack, right? We have we're already in heaven according to the one, right? So so again, it's just kind of not matching up.

And as you as you go, I'm just touching on two other people. There's two people who kind of give a timeline as far as when the rapture happen is Jesus and Paul. Jesus in Matthew 24 which we talked a lot about last week. Matthew 24 is the um the Oliv discourse where Jesus is asked what's going to happen at the end times and he describes what's going to happen.

And so he he goes in 24 and he starts telling them about the tribulation about the abomination desolation and everything. And we come down to verse 29. Okay. After he's told them all about the tribulation, here's what he says.

Immediately after the tribulation of those days, the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light. The stars will fall from heaven and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Now, the sixth seal in Revelation follows that same exact order, which I believe they're the same thing. But then the sign of the son of man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

So this is this is at the end. He's coming in power and he will send his angels out with the great sound of a trumpet and they will gather together his elect, that's us, from the four winds from the one end of heaven to the other. Okay? It's when he's coming that he calls us up.

There's not anywhere in Jesus's description in 24 and 25 where we get called up seven years earlier and then and then go. So if Jesus isn't mentioning it, it may not be. But then Paul was the lynch pin for me. As I listen to different people, they would always talk.

Paul describes the rapture in two places. Thessalonians and Corinthians. Okay. The pre-tribulation people always quote the Thessalonians one because it says it happens at at a trumpet.

Okay. A trumpet call sounds. Jesus also said trumpet. We just read that, right?

But in 1 Corinthians, he's more specific. He says, and this is 1 Corinthians 51-52. Behold, I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed in a moment, in the twinkle of an eye, at the last trumpet.

For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. So Paul okay says it happens at the final trumpet. There is a final trumpet in Revelation. It's the seventh trumpet, okay?

And it's near the end, not near the beginning. So you come to this and you say, well, Paul says it's near the end and Jesus says it's near the end. in Revelation 12 shows that we're we're we're attacked. So, I've got to either believe Scofield and all the people that were trained by him or I've got to believe Jesus or Paul because they're both saying something different.

Okay? And to me, I'm just going to I'm a simple guy. I'm just going to believe this word. When when I first was taught evolution, I thought that's stupid.

That doesn't make any sense. Okay? I was a third grader. It didn't make any sense, right?

I I didn't want to embrace it because it didn't make any sense. It goes directly against what the Bible says is how this earth was created, right? So, it goes against God. Likewise here, it goes against God.

So, you say, "Why does all that matter?" Okay, Brian. And I it doesn't for us to be divi divided. Okay?

We're not to be divided on doctrine. Okay? We should be embracing as long as we believe in the core doctrine that matters like Jesus is Lord. Okay, we should be working together.

Okay, united against things. However, what's easier to do? Deal with your 90-year-old mother who just got moved to hospice and you know she's only got two weeks to live and then and then she eventually dies or or you get a call your seven-year-old son got run over coming out from school and is dead. which is easier to deal with.

Okay, the thing you're ready for. All right, you have time to mourn. You have time to get ready. The thing that hits out of left field, okay, is the thing that's that's much more tragic.

All right, anyone ever been through any storms in their life? And and have you ever had Jesus help you through those storms? Anyone? >> Every single person in the room has had Jesus help you through those storms.

So when we read things in tribulation that are going to happen and we get attacked and stuff, who's going to be there with us? >> Jesus. Okay? If he's done it before, he'll do it again.

He always does it. He's good. Okay? He's good to do that.

But if this one belief keeps you on the sidelines instead of getting into the game because you're just waiting for this time when we all get scooted up while all these things are happening that are described in here, okay? Then you're not ready. And and Christians should be the ones that are in the boat helping the the women and children off, okay? We should be the ones that are ready and that are battle ready and that are there when the tough times come, right?

And so God's what I want is for us to be a church that's ready for when those times come. Okay? What if I'm wrong? We all get wrapped up.

Hey, great. Okay. But but if Jesus is right and Paul is right, then let's get ready so that we can be in the battle, okay? Focused and ready.

Faith is a muscle. You have to practice. You have to exercise that muscle, okay? It's a muscle.

And so God's purpose for you, we have to understand a heavenly perspective. Okay? God's purpose for you is not your happiness. >> It's your holiness.

>> Okay? >> He's your job. He what he wants to do is make you more like Jesus. And so we live in deceptive time, right?

But this is the truth. >> Okay? So for me, if something goes against this, I'm just going to believe this. And I'm not going to hate on anyone else who does it.

Again, >> the greatest saints that I some of the greatest saints that I know believed in preacher my mentor believed in a preacher of rapture. Doesn't make them a bad guy. They're not going to hell because of of a belief. Okay?

But but to me, if Jesus and Paul said, then I want to I want to run with that because I want to be ready. I want to be ready for the battle. Okay? There's nothing better than a relationship with Jesus.

>> Can I get an amen on that? There's nothing better than a relationship with Jesus. So why not get ready for a time, right? >> Didn't you have a a this weeks ago?

We prayed over their family and and from what I understand, your brother is hunting today, right? >> Isn't that amazing, man? He's hunting. He was on life support basically just four or five weeks ago and now he's out hunting.

>> Um that's God. And so Jesus came to give us joy. But we have to understand the heavenly perspective on joy. Okay?

Joy isn't living large, being a player, living large. Okay? Joy according to Jesus is his is the absolute freedom to do exactly what God wants you to do when he wants you to do it. Okay?

I like the way Oswwell Chambers says it. He says, "The joy of Jesus was the absolute self-surrender and self-sacrifice to his father." the joy of doing that which his father sent him to do. >> Hebrews 12:2 echoes that when it says Jesus who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross.

Joy is freedom to do the father's will. Okay? And and he'll give us that joy and our joy will be complete and then we don't have fear. There's nothing to fear.

If you know God's got you, there's nothing to fear. And so many people today are are wrapped in fear. And so again, God's purpose is is not your happiness, it's your holiness. We're going to spend an eternity with him.

This time on this planet is just a blip. It's just a blip, man. So, it's a partnership up there. You got God, you got Jesus, you got the Holy Spirit living in you, all trying to grow you if you'll be open to it.

>> Amen. >> To to becoming more like Jesus. John 16:33 says, "In this world, you will have tribulation." This is again Jesus talking, "But be of good cheer.

I have overcome the world. And so we just affirmed everyone here has had God come in the tough times and be with them. Right? >> Amen.

>> Um and so it's a short time and then it's over. Now there may be people listening online and there may be people um thinking, well that's not my God. My God wants only good for me all the days of my life. That is a scripture.

Okay. But we have to understand God's perspective on good. Okay. Um, I'll hear people say that uh um we get raptured up because the wrath of God doesn't come on the Christians.

Okay? And there are passages that say the wrath of God should not come on the Christians. But I did a word search on wrath. Okay?

And everywhere you see the word wrath in regards to at times it's usually either hell itself or it's the great terrible day of the Lord when he's actually coming. Okay? Or you find it in revelation. you really the only time you find in revelation is in description of the final bold judgments.

You don't hear the wrath being mentioned as the seal or the um trumpet judgments. So, so the entire tribulation period is not the wrath of God. Okay? Remember for 42 months the devil is attacking us.

That's not God's wrath. That's just the time. Okay? But in uh Revelation 15:5, it says, "And these things and these things I looked, and behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened, and out of the temple came the seven angels having the seven plagues clothed in pure bright linen, having their chest skirted with golden bands."

Then one of the four living preachers gave to the the bold judgments come after the rapture. We're already up, okay? And so it is it is literally him pouring out his wrath on those that aren't saved. Okay, that's the wrath of God that's talked about in in wherever.

So, if he's going to battle us for 42 months, guess what? God will be with us, though. And he always grows us in the valleys, okay? And so, Psalm 91 is like a beautiful battle cry, okay, for for our attitude towards things in this end times, okay?

And it's setting our sights on God, on Jesus. Okay, listen to this. I'm going to read it. It's so beautiful.

Psalm 91. He who dwells in the secret place of the most high shall abide under the shadow of the almighty. I will say to the Lord, he is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom in him I will trust. Surely he shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence.

He shall cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you shall take refuge. His truth shall be your shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by the day, nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. A thousand may fall at your side, and 10,000 at your right hand, but it shall not come near you.

Only with your eyes shall you look and see the reward of the wicked. Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, even the most high, your dwelling place, no evil shall befall you, nor shall any plague come near your dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.

You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, the young lion and the serpent, you shall trample underfoot. Now here, God is now speaking through the psalmist. Okay, so this is God speaking now. Because he has set his love upon me, therefore I will deliver him.

This is God speaking now. We set his our love upon him and he will deliver us. I will set him on high because he has known my name. He shall call upon me and I will answer him.

I will be with him in trouble. I will deliver him and honor him with long life. I will satisfy him and show him my salvation. Okay?

Isn't that beautiful, >> man? So, what do you do? You set your eyes on Jesus. Focus on Jesus, on that relationship, okay, during these times and let his joy flow through you, okay?

Get to the place in your life that no matter what happens, you've got the joy of Jesus, okay? And once there, the end times are nothing to be afraid of. The the tough times that are coming are nothing to be afraid of. And there's no downside to growing your relationship with Jesus, right?

None. It's going to make you a better husband, better father, better wife, mother, whatever. Okay? And so, Gabriel, I want to ask you guys, okay?

What about you? What about you? Have you uh known about Jesus but maybe not um embraced him down deep in your heart. Okay?

Taking what he said and you heard up here and bring him down to your heart. Okay? If that's you and you want to come and and uh ask Jesus in your heart, we're here. We've got preachers around here that can sit with you and talk with you.

Okay. Um maybe you you have a lot of fear or a lot of worry right now. You know, maybe things aren't going the way you want or things are tough and and um you're you're struggling in some areas. Maybe you're not with with someone and you're you're just you're struggling.

Okay, come on up, man. Let's lay it down. Lay that fear and worry down and pick up the love of Jesus, which is so powerful. Okay, which is so amazing.

All right, Revelation 12:11 says something. Pop it up. Revelation 12:11 says this, "And they overcame him by the blood of the lamb and by the word of their testimony." So even though we're going to get attacked, we will overcome him, the Antichrist, by the blood of the lamb and by the testimony, our testimony.

Okay? And they did not love their lives to the death. The blood not only takes away your sin, okay? But it's also the power to defeat the devil.

It's the power to have victory, okay? There's nothing for us to be worried about. Okay? So maybe Maybe you want to recommmit to just getting battle ready.

Okay? Maybe you want to go and get battle ready. Um for for the time that's to come. I want to I want to encourage you to do that, too.

Okay? And just come on up. Um the blood is the power to prevail. Anyone else want to come up?

All right. So, um, let me pray over you guys and then we're going to do a song. You've got something for us to take out, right? >> We're coming to the altar.

>> Come to the altar. Nice. Okay. Do it.

[Music] >> Jesus is calling. [Music] Lord, I thank you so much for this day. I thank you for your blessings, Lord. I thank you for these people here, Lord.

Lord, I just pray that your hand beyond each one in this room, Lord. I pray that you will be with them as they go off into their week this week as they go back into the mission field, Lord, where they work and where they live. Lord, I just pray that they will have your power. They will focus on you and you will they will experience your joy and flowing through rivers of water flowing through them so that they will be just a blessing to those that they see this week.
