New Wineskin!

New Wineskin!

Matthew 9:16 & 17 “No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch pulls away from the garment and the tear is made worse. Nor do they put new wine in old wineskins, or else the wineskins break, the wine is spilled, and the wineskins are ruined. But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”

For years I never understood the above statement until I realized that Jesus was talking about us and our Christian walk. When you are saved, you are a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17). You are “new wine”. The Holy Spirit is now in you. If you focus on God, reading the Bible, and praying, then the Holy Spirit will be growing you, making you more like Jesus every day. Growth is good; what a beautiful truth, we get to grow in Christ till the day we die…woo hoo! But this new creation self will not flourish if you put it back into your old self. The new wine is the new you, the old wineskin is the old you; you can not embrace the new you while clinging to your old self. You see, the new wine ferments in the wineskin; it grows. The old wineskin can not expand, and so they both get ruined.

So many times, people get saved and then go back to their old self and try to clean up. That is a mistake. You need to embrace your new creation and create a new wineskin, one that can handle your expanding self. You don’t have to clean up; you don’t have to be a “better version of the old you”; you are a new creation. That is Biblical truth! Nor should you try to take a “patch” of the new you and try to fill in the holes in the old you-What Jesus is saying here is you need to just embrace the new you and begin to live out of that relationship with Him. It may take some time to believe it; it may take some time to embrace, but according to our Lord, the only wise thing is to put away the old and embrace the new creation that you are. Last Sunday I gave a sermon on this very topic, explaining step by step how to do it! I think it is a valuable one for many people- so check it out if you have not yet; click this link below to watch!
